Uffington Castle and White Horse in LiDAR
Uffington Castle and White Horse is an Iron Age hillfort in Oxfordshire. Here it is in the Environment Agency's 1 m LiDAR, shaded so the shape of the ground stands out. Look for the single ring of bank and ditch with its outer counterscarp bank, the one entrance on the west side, and the outline of the chalk-cut horse on the slope to the north-north-east.
What you can see
- Uffington Castle encloses 3.2 hectares, up to 220 metres west to east and 160 metres north to south. (Historic England)
- It has a single main bank about 12 metres wide inside a 15-metre ditch, with a smaller counterscarp bank beyond that. (Historic England)
- The only entrance is on the west: a causeway flanked by the out-turned ends of the inner rampart. (Historic England)
- The White Horse, 170 metres north-north-east of the hillfort, is about 111 metres from tail to ear and 40 metres high. (Historic England)
