Terms of use
These terms cover the Shadowmark Maps app and the website shadowmarkmaps.com. They are run by Shadowmark Ltd
("we"), a company registered in England and Wales (company number 17533305), registered office
Level 30, The Leadenhall Building, 122 Leadenhall Street, London EC3V 4AB. Last updated 18 October 2026.
If you download the app from the App Store, Apple's
standard licence agreement (EULA)
also applies. If you download it from Google Play, Google Play's terms apply. These terms add to those.
Who can use it
You must be 18 or over to use Shadowmark Maps.
What's free and what's Pro
- Free: national LiDAR shading, Scheduled Monument outlines and warnings (England), your position on the map,
search, the finds log, the compass, sharing, one offline area and three 60-second Pro peeks a week. Unused peeks
don't carry over.
- Pro: the Shade, Detail, Relief, Sky-view and Combined views (England), 3D terrain, A3 print export
(England) and unlimited offline areas.
- An offline area can cover up to 25 km². Satellite imagery is never saved offline, because its licence doesn't
allow it.
- We may improve, change or retire features. If we remove a Pro feature that was part of what you paid for, we'll
tell you in the app's release notes.
Subscriptions and purchases
- The app is free to download. Pro is a monthly or annual subscription, or a one-off Lifetime purchase, bought
through the App Store or Google Play. The price, billing period and any trial are shown before you confirm.
- Subscriptions renew automatically at the price shown until you cancel. On iPhone, cancel at least 24 hours
before the end of the current period to avoid the next charge. Manage or cancel in Settings › your name ›
Subscriptions (iPhone) or Google Play › Profile › Payments and subscriptions › Subscriptions (Android).
- Free trial: the annual plan starts with a 7-day free trial for new subscribers. When it ends you're charged
the annual price, unless you cancel before then (on iPhone, at least 24 hours before).
- Cancelling stops the next renewal. Pro stays on until the end of the period you've paid for.
- Lifetime Pro is a one-off payment with no renewal. It unlocks Pro on the Apple Account or Google account
you bought it with, for as long as we offer Shadowmark Maps. It covers the Pro features in the app, including ones we
add to Pro later.
- Use Restore purchases on the Pro screen to unlock Pro again on a new phone or after reinstalling.
- If a subscription price changes, Apple or Google tells you in advance and, where their rules require it, asks you
to agree.
- Refunds are decided by Apple or Google under their policies. Your rights as a consumer under UK law are not
affected.
Use the map responsibly
- Always get the landowner's permission before you search, detect or dig, and agree in writing who owns any finds.
All land has an owner, including fields, woods, parks and beaches.
- Never detect, dig or remove objects on a Scheduled Monument. Without consent (from Historic England in England) it
is a criminal offence. The app marks Scheduled Monuments in England in red and warns you near them, but the outlines
are a guide, not a legal boundary, and the official National Heritage List for England is the authority.
- The app does not show other places where detecting is restricted. These include Sites of Special Scientific
Interest, military aircraft crash sites, open access land and land in some farm environment schemes, as well as
protected sites in Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and other countries. Check before you go.
- Report potential Treasure within 14 days, record other finds with the Portable Antiquities Scheme, and follow the
Code of Practice for Responsible Metal Detecting. Our guide to the rules has the
details and links.
- Don't use Shadowmark Maps to break the law or to trespass.
- Don't copy, scrape or bulk-download map data from the app or our servers, or resell it. Saving offline areas for
your own use is fine.
Accuracy and safety
- LiDAR shading is a picture of survey data. It shows the shape of the ground, not what lies in it. Many features are
natural or modern, and the data can contain errors or be out of date.
- Monument outlines come from Historic England and may be incomplete or out of date, especially in saved offline
areas, which are only as current as the day you saved them.
- GPS positions can be out by several metres or more.
- Don't rely on the app for navigation in difficult conditions, for safety, or for surveying. Take care in the
countryside and follow the Countryside Code.
Your finds and what you share
- Your finds log stays on your phone (and in your phone's own backups, if you use them). You're responsible for
keeping a copy: we can't recover it if your phone is lost or the app is deleted.
- You're responsible for what you share. The Code of Practice says findspots shouldn't be passed on without the
landowner's agreement.
Data and credits
Map data comes from public bodies and other providers under their licences, including the Open Government Licence
v3.0. The credits are in the app and on the data and licences page. Shadowmark Maps is
independent: it is not affiliated with, and does not represent, any government body or data provider, and none of them
endorses it.
Our responsibility to you
- We provide the app with reasonable care and skill, and as described. Nothing in these terms limits your rights as
a consumer under UK law, or our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, or for fraud.
- We aren't responsible for losses we couldn't reasonably foresee, for business losses, or for losses that come from
using the app against these terms or the law, such as detecting where you had no right to.
Changes and the law
We may update these terms. We'll change the date at the top, and say so in the app's release notes if the change
matters. These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can
also bring a claim in your local courts.
