Burrough Hill in LiDAR
Burrough Hill is an Iron Age hillfort in Leicestershire. Here it is in the Environment Agency's 1 m LiDAR, shaded so the shape of the ground stands out. Look for a near-complete rampart ring around a level hilltop of about 5ha, with a long inturned entrance on the south-east side.
What you can see
- A turf-covered stone rampart, up to 2m high on the inside, encloses a level area of about 5ha. (Historic England)
- The south-east entrance is formed by 2m-high banks that turn inward for about 35m. (Historic England)
- The hill falls away on every side except the east, making it easy to defend. (Historic England)
- Historic England calls it the finest large univallate hillfort in Leicestershire, with a complete circuit of ramparts. (Historic England)
Visiting
Leicestershire County Council says its parks are open every day, with a pay car park whose closing time varies by month. (Leicestershire County Council)
Official record: Historic England list entry 1012441: Burrough Iron Age hill fort.
Look, don't detect or dig
Burrough Hill is a Scheduled Monument, protected by law because it's of national importance. In England it's a criminal offence to use a metal detector on a Scheduled Monument without Historic England's written consent, and to remove any object of archaeological or historical interest found with one. Damaging a scheduled monument is an offence too, and works on one, including digging, need Scheduled Monument Consent first. More on Scheduled Monuments and the rules.
