British Camp in LiDAR
British Camp is an Iron Age hillfort in Herefordshire. Here it is in the Environment Agency's 1 m LiDAR, shaded so the shape of the ground stands out. Look for the long bank and ditch running round the two hilltops, four entrance gaps, the ringwork in the northern half and small hut circles inside.
What you can see
- British Camp is a long, irregular enclosure over two hilltops, running north to south for about 870 metres and up to 270 metres wide, narrowing in the middle. (Historic England)
- A bank up to 3 metres high with an outer ditch up to 21 metres wide surrounds it, broken by four inturned entrances on the east, west, south and north-east. (Historic England)
- About 120 hut circles, 4.5 to 12 metres across, have been identified inside the hillfort. (Historic England)
- A medieval ringwork known as The Citadel sits in the northern half of the enclosure. (Historic England)

Look, don't detect or dig
British Camp is a Scheduled Monument, protected by law because it's of national importance. In England it's a criminal offence to use a metal detector on a Scheduled Monument without Historic England's written consent, and to remove any object of archaeological or historical interest found with one. Damaging a scheduled monument is an offence too, and works on one, including digging, need Scheduled Monument Consent first. More on Scheduled Monuments and the rules.
Keep to paths and open access land, and follow the Countryside Code.
